While the flower farm was taking shape, one memeber of the team was setting the stage for the next chapter in our journey.
We had been kicking around the idea of getting bees for awhile, especially since Carol took a beekeeping class in college. To start things off, she sent herself to our local county’s beekeeping course and earned herself a Beeploma. (Ain’t that something) After this, it was something like bee fever and we were looking to really satisfy that itch. This is when my parents beekeeping mentor came in….
Our local group, Greene County Beekeepers Association, when you join the group and have a hive, a mentor is assigned. This mentor acts as your access to first hand knowledge of beekeeping in your area. There is no price that can be put on that kind of experience and helpfulness.
My parent’s mentor was moving so 6 diffent hives needed to be sent to new homes. Living in Bellbrook, we were only allowed, per city laws, 2 hives. If you are considering getting into beekeeping, be sure to check your local laws and ordinances pertaining to bees.
Whats Next?
- Determine Hive location based on local laws
- Create Bee Stand / Bee Area to keep pets out
- Install water source for bees
- Transport Bees
- Get things Started
The next blog will go into detail about the backyard preperation we did, moving the bees to their new home, and their first week here!
They have been loving it so far
