I can only imagine how upset I would be if my house got thrown into a pickup truck and dropped in the middle of nowhere
Pre-flight checklist
- City Regulations
- I won’t go much more into detail on this topic as it is extremely specific to your area
- Examples:
- Hive must be 6 ft from any structure, 15ft from any property line, a running water source within 10ft and so on.. ‘
- Be sure to check out your own local laws and regulations
- Install said water source ^
- Build the bee stand and surrounding area
- How are we going to transport?
Pond installation
Installing a pond is honestly one of the harder options, you can easily install just a pump fountain with some decent spots for the bees to land and you are good to go. I decided to go a little more overboard so I mapped out the location and got quite a bit lucky that it could be right at the edge of our flower bed. Once I figured out where it was going, where to get the power and I got to digging.
The few tips I learned along the way :
- Sand is a great base for helping yourself level the pond
- Flipping the bond over gives you an outline to dig initially
- Concrete = Bad for pond water
- The lime in some mixes will dissolve and turn the water acidic
- Weigh down the bond pump with rocks
- Don’t set it up too close to the edge and completed drain your pond and flood the area next to it….
Bee Stand Construction
Carol being the best person to comission for designing any structure, especially if it needs to do any kinda supporting. She pulled up some designs, mocked it up and then we were off to Lowe’s. We made sure to get pressure treated wood, in ground anchors and some good heavy duty deck screws. ( I do not want to rescrew on a bee stand with bees in it )
After leveling and getting it in place, we dumped a good portion of river rocks under the stand to help prevent pests. This was something Carol is bringing back from her bee class.
That is pretty much it in terms of backyard prep! I will be trying to get more blogs out to try and catch up to where we are now. If you have any questions in the meantime, feel free to leave them below!
Stay Tuned!
